MORE ABOUT THE PATAGONIA
DISTRICT AND EL CALAFATE CITY |
Patagonia is the most popular region to visit within
Argentina among adventurous travelers. Patagonia
is the southernmost region of Argentina, formed
by the provinces of La Pampa, Neuquen, Rio Negro,
Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego. It is
an enormous region stretching south of the River
Rio Colorado, just beyond the province of Buenos
Aires, all the way to the Strait of Magellan.
Beyond the strait, Argentina and Chile share the
archipelago of Tierra de Fuego. The two most popular
places to visit are El Calafate and its mountains
& glaciers, and the world’s southernmost
located city Ushuaia.
El
Calafate is a small and charming village
located at the edge of the Lake Argentino. The
town is situated 185m above sea level, and approx
2.750km from Argentina’s Capital, Buenos
Aires and a direct flight to go between the
places may take 3hours 15min. The town was founded
in 1927 and has a population of approx 4.000
fixed inhabitants, and belongs to the province
of Santa Cruz (part of Patagonia). In summer,
the average temperature is 18,6°C in winter,
the average temperature is minus 1,8°. The
daylight hours vary according to the season
of the year, in summer the longest day is December
21st with the sunrise at 05:30 am and the sunset
is approx at 23:00. In winter the shortest day
is June 21st, with 8 hours daylight (09:30am
to 17:30). The main attractions are the National
Park and Natural Reserve of "Los Glaciares",
declared by UNESCO as a site of world-wide patrimony
(natural). The park is constituted by the Lakes
Viedma & Argentino and its environments,
and that part of the ice field includes the
Glaciers of Moreno, Onelli, Agassiz and Upsala.
The most amazing glacier might be the Perito
Moreno that descends to the Argentino Lake.
We recommend 3 nights stay, to able you to visit
the regions main attractions during two full
days.
