MORE ABOUT ARGENTINA
- SOUTH AMERICA |
The Argentine Republic covers the most austral territory in the American
Continent. The continental part of the country
covers a surface close to 2.800.000 square kilometers,
and extends for 3.700 km from north to south and
1.400 km from east to west. The total extension
of the territory exceeds the 3.700.000 square
kilometers, including the Melvin’s Islands,
the Argentine Antarctic Sector, the Orcadas and
the South Sandwich Islands.
This enormous territory has made Argentina to
be the largest Spanish speaking country in the
world, containing all possible different sceneries:
impenetrable woods, very high mountains, sumptuous
cities, barren deserts, spectacular waterfalls,
snow, sea, typical small towns, and elegant beaches.
All this is Argentina, which you must know. Divided
in 23 Provinces and one National Territory, the
present Argentina was colonized by Spain in the
XVII century, and declared her independence from
the mother country in 1816.
In
the last part of the XIX and beginning of the
XX centuries, a deluge of immigrants arrived at
her shores, most of who were of European origin,
which has resulted in the cosmopolitan spirit
shown by the 33 million inhabitants, most of them
descendants from these foreigners. The Spanish
and Italian communities are the most numerous,
but also there are descendants of French, Germans,
Polish, Swiss, Japanese and Turks, amongst others.
The official religion is the Apostolic Roman Catholic,
but there is a complete freedom of worship, living
together in the country members of the Catholic,
Protestant, Jewish, Moslem and Buddhist faiths,
who have built many and beautiful temples corresponding
to their respective beliefs. Because of this large
territory, Argentina has a complete diversity
of climates, from the very warm tropical in the
extreme north, to the intensely cold and polar
in the extreme south. In the city of Buenos Aires
and surroundings, the climate is mild and most
agreeable, and permits that a pleasant visit be
made at any time of the year.
The
Peso is the currency of the country but American
dollars and traveler's checks are accepted in
general without any difficulty, and other currencies
may be freely exchanged in the Banks and Exchange
Agencies. Credit Cards best known in the world
are of course accepted all over the country. Argentina,
even when maintaining her sceneries and nature
practically untouched, is a completely modernized
country and keeps pace with the last advances
in the world. A good aerial and land transport
infrastructure exists, as well as a very ample
communications network, internal and external,
which are available at any moment.
There is an extensive network of hotels covering
the country, which give the travelers a wide choice
of conveniences and prices, from the rustic mountain
shelters to the most sophisticated international
deluxe hotels. And above all mention has to be
made of the cordiality and hospitality of Argentines,
who are always ready to offer a warm welcome to
the tourists.
