US dollars (cash) are easier to trade/exchange and are worth a bit more on the parallel market, but traveler's cheques are an insurance against loss. The can be hard to change sometimes, especially outside of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and that's why you might prefer to carry a credit card.
