Credit
cards are useful in Brazil, but make sure that they
accept your card before entering a restaurant. Visa
is the most spread card in Brazil and secondly MasterCard,
but exclusive restaurants, hotels, and shops accept
American Express and Diners Club too. Purchases with
credit cards gives the most favorable exchange rate.
If you go traveling into the interior and smaller cities,
then it is recommendable to take cash with you. Check
the list under 'Exchange and
withdrawal money', where you find a cash dispenser
close to your stay. Pay attention to shops' quotations,
"part payment with credit card", it works
only with domestic issued credit cards.
Traveler's
checks are may be safer than cash and credit cards,
but they can sometimes be hard to exchange, especially
outside of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Notice that
just some banks, travel agencies, hotels and shops
are allowed to change traveler's checks. In São Paulo
can checks from American Express be changed, without
charge for the change, at Guarulhos International
Airport, Sala Centurion, between 6:30 and 22:30. A
second option is at Hotel Sheraton Mofarrej, (street)
Alameda Santos, 1437 - Jardins, between 9:30 and 17:30.
The bigger banks like Banco Itaú and Banco Bradesco
can also change American Express' Traveler Checks
but they charge for the service, note that not all
offices they have offer this service.
