Before
the privatization of the telecom sector in Brazil,
there was only one national wide telecom company named
Embratel. In each state was also one state wide telecom
company taking care of phone calls within and from
the state, Telesp in São Paulo for instance. Today
there are many operators on the Brazilian market.
By this change the telephone network has started to
be improved, but there are still problems like, noise
on the line, intersected lines, cut lines and you
need to redial. In the region of São Paulo they are
replacing 7-digit numbers for 8-digits.
To make phone calls
in Brazil:
· Within São Paulo City - just dial the number
without the area code.
· Between two different areas - dial '0' + the
code for the operator 'xx' + the area code '11' for
São Paulo or '21' for Rio, and then the telephone
number.
· International phone
calls - dial
'00' + the code for the operator 'xx' + the country
code + the area code in your country and then the
telephone number.

Cellular
Phones
There are both analogue and digital cellular phone
systems in Brazil. The analogue system use the AMPS
technology and one of the digital systems use TDMA
technology (Claro or BSP operator) CDMA
technology (VIVO operator) and GSM
(TIM operator). This means that you are able to use
these mobile phones in Brazil, but maybe not en every
area, as Brazil is the world’s fifth biggest
country, has to build much more stations on the continent.
The GSM is quite new in Brazil and grows a lot, but
the traditional system with the best coverage is the
operator VIVO using the American system CDMA. You
are also able to rent a cell phone using VIVO at the
airports in Sao Paulo and Rio. If you would like to
rent a phone consult Packtours.
