The
town is located 181km from São Paulo, in the mountains
of “Serra da Mantiqueira” (1.700m above sea level).
Campos do Jordão is the ‘’number one” of destinations
among people from Sao Paulo during wintertime. The
region has several famous water springs, and the town
itself is famous as ‘’Mini-Switzerland”, with the
neighbourhood “Capivara” as downtown. There are many
houses with an architecture, typical in the Alps,
actually there is a feeling of to be in an “after-ski”
in the Alps, but there is no snow and no possibilities
of skiing. Many business open just during high season,
and there are many shops selling chocolate, cheese,
souvenirs, warm clothes like sweaters, leather jackets.
There are also some temporary nightclubs for teenagers,
and several outdoor restaurants where you drink a
beer or a wine and eat some snack. The culinary in
general has a great influence from Switzerland, with
fondue, etc. The main activity during the day might
be light trekking or horse riding, instead of skiing…!
The
best way to go to Campos do Jordão is by car, and
also during your stay you may need a car to go around.
Another option is by bus. The bus goes from Tietê
bus station in Sao Paulo and the trips takes 3 hours.
You
can visit Campos do Jordão the whole year, but June
to August, is considered to be high season and the
city has a great movement of tourists. The high season
is caused by the popularity to travel to the mountains
during wintertime (June, July & August) this because
of the temperature falls and it is cool night time
(it can reach a temperature of some degrees below
zero Celsius.), which is exotic and attractive among
people in São Paulo (Brazil).The high season has its
peek in July when the schools are closed for winter
brake, and families with children/teenagers travel.
Note: Rainy days, especially summertime, the region’s
dirt roads can be in bad conditions.
