For
many reasons, Barra de Cunhau has
become a goal for many modern day explorers! Cunhau
lies in an area of amazing natural beauty with a
harmonious, relaxing environment – precisely
those things that people come here to find. The
people of Cunhau are mainly fishermen and farmers
who seem always to have a smile on their lips and
a welcoming way with visitors to really make them
feel at home. Many people, both Brazilians and Europeans
alike, have found their way here on holiday only
to remain, either permanently or to establish holiday
homes here.
The
actual village and main street lie alongside the
river, where you can wander around the small shops
or quench your thirst at any one of the several
bars to be found here. There are some 7 –
8 restaurant serving different types of food and
of different culinary levels. In the mornings, you
can buy fresh fish from the fishermen and newly
baked bread from the bakery.
The majority of the small hotels lie alongside the
magnificent 7 kilometers beach. You can either swim
in the lagoon, into which the river runs and is
a little calmer with no waves and where you can
also paddle a canoe or learn to wind-surf. If you
then want the excitement of waves, sand and surf,
then the ocean is only a few steps away, open for
whatever adventure takes your fancy.
6 kilometers north of Cunhau is the village of Pipa
where you can find any number of night clubs and
discos for those thirsty for exciting nightlife
and the party atmosphere.
Natal, the main town of the area lies 80 kilometers
north of Cunhau. It’s called “The City
of sun”. Here you have a great variety of
shopping and museum and the impressive castle of
Três Magres which the Portuguese build when
they arrived.
