MER OM JERICOACOARA

Jericoacoara is a small fishing village where dozens of palms drowning in sand dunes face jangadas (sailboats) stuck on a broad gray beach. It is located 320km Northwest of Fortaleza, about 6 hours by bus or less then one hour by air. The site became famous since Washington Post and New York Times prized the beach to be one of the 10 most beautiful in the world. To consider the village's small size, there are many options of accommodations, eating houses and shops. It is a nice atmosphere in Jeri, a bit picturesque with small houses, narrow sandy streets, and people who mix the local Forro-style with the hippie-style form the 70s. Even at night, with the lights off, Jericoacoara is beautiful.

In "Jeri" you can also climb the sand dunes (watching the sunset from the top is mandatory, but sand-surfing down s only for "crazies"), go for a ride on a jangada, or walk to Pedra Furada, a rock three km east along the beach. You can also make a day-trip by beach buggy to the blue lake Lagoa da Gijoca or Paraiso. It is a bit tricky to go to Jericoacoara, because there are no paved roads the last kilometers. You go either from Gijoca in the sandy and hilly terrain or Camocim along the coast, but you need a transfer witch takes about one hour, by Jardineira (truck/station wagon), or faster by jeep/buggy. When to go: The whole year. Between December and June is the rain period - warm but mainly cloudy. July to November the sun is strong and it's windy, in favor to practice windsurf. Straight after the rain period, the lakes are full of water again and the sun makes the sea and lakes very blue.
